Meet Terence J. O'Brien, BSc(Hons) BEd CIP QMed
Terence (Terry) O’Brien brings a wealth of experience to the world of dispute resolution, having spent more than 40 years in the insurance claims industry with major insurers. Terry is a Qualified Mediator, recognized by the Alternate Dispute Resolution Institute of Canada (Ontario). He holds a post-graduate Certificate in Dispute Resolution from York University. He successfully completed ADRIO’s Internship Program under the auspices of Senior Mediator Jonathan Fidler.
Terry has great respect for justice and the dispute resolution process. As a neutral party he values the need for fairness and confidentiality. He welcomes the opportunity to assist with your mediation needs.
Experience
Terry has negotiated and managed a multitude of personal injury litigation files, both from a tort (Bodily Injury) and no-fault (Accident Benefits) perspective. His claim management experience has involved the resolution of many complex files through private mediation, as well as, hundreds of disputes through the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. As a result, Terry has a solid understanding of personal injury claims as presented under the Rules of Civil Procedure in the Courts, and through the Dispute Resolution Code governing the mediation-arbitration process under FSCO. He is familiar with the new Licence Appeal Tribunal.
As a senior manager, Terry was often called upon by associates and upper management for direction. He often was produced as an expert witness in litigation and arbitration proceedings.
Education
Terry earned his post-graduate Dispute Resolution Certificate from York University, followed by ADRIO’s Internship Program with Senior Mediator Jonathan Fidler. Terry is also an acredited Workplace Fairness Analyst.
He obtained his Honours Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) and Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Windsor. In addition, Terry has a diploma in Legal Principles from the American Educational Institute, and has attained the Chartered Insurance Professional designation. He has completed the Communication and Leadership certification through Toastmasters International.
Education is ongoing through the Alternate Dispute Resolution Institutes of Canada and Ontario.
Industry Involvement
Terry has been active in the insurance industry working with the Insurance Bureau of Canada to speak to elected members of the Ontario Legislative Assembly on insurance issues. He has addressed a joint IBC-Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association meeting on the State of the Insurance Industry. Terry serves as Co-Chair of ADRIO's Insurance Section.
Volunteer Work
Terry has volunteered his time as the founding member of the Accidental Benefits, a musical group, performing and recording to raise funds for the Princess Margaret Hospital Cancer Research Initiative through Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade. He has also worked with the United Way of Greater Toronto and York Region. Terry is an active member of the Alternate Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario, serving as Co-Chair of the Insurance Section special interest committee.
